Simbang Gabi Etiquette: Dos and Don’ts for the Filipino Christmas Novena

December 18, 2025

The beloved Filipino tradition of Simbang Gabi, also known as Misa de Gallo has begun. This nine-day series of devotional masses, which runs from December 16 to 24, is a spiritual preparation for Christmas.

To help you make the most of this Christian custom, here are some key dos and don’ts for proper church etiquette:

✅ The Dos (Proper Reverence and Preparation)

  • Do focus on the spiritual message. The primary purpose of Simbang Gabi is spiritual preparation. Listen attentively to the Gospel and the homily, reflecting on the readings.
  • Do dress modestly and appropriately. Remember that you are in a house of worship. While the atmosphere may be relaxed, church officials emphasize that clothing should reflect the sacredness of the celebration. For women, this includes avoiding anything too short or revealing. For men, collared shirts or t-shirts and trousers are recommended.
  • Do participate actively in the mass. Stay awake and engage in the prayers, responses, and hymns. Active participation helps keep your mind focused on the mass and prevents you from dozing off.
  • Do stay until the mass is finished. Leaving before the final blessing or the closing song is considered inappropriate. Be present from the start to the end.
  • Do enjoy the traditional Christmas delicacies afterward. A major part of the post-mass tradition is enjoying treats like bibingka and puto bumbong sold outside the church.

❌ The Don’ts (Actions to Avoid in Church)

  • Don’t engage in prolonged conversation or gossiping. Reserve all unnecessary talk for after the mass
  • Don’t use the mass as a social event or a date. Public displays of affection (PDA) or actively searching for someone to flirt with are considered disrespectful to the sacred space.
  • Don’t treat the church aisle like a fashion runway.22 While it’s fine to look presentable, avoid overly flashy or distracting outfits.
  • Don’t focus on the superstitious belief that a wish will automatically be granted. While many believe completing all nine days will grant a wish, church leaders stress that this tradition is primarily a spiritual act of sacrifice and devotion.

Simbang Gabi is a meaningful way for Filipino Catholics to prepare their hearts for the Nativity of Jesus Christ. By practicing reverence and respecting the shared space, you can help preserve the solemnity and beauty of this centuries-old tradition.
