VP Sara Duterte Is Running For President in 2028

Today’s biggest news— Vice President Sara Duterte’s announcement that she will run for the country’s highest position in 2028.

“I am Sara Duterte, and I will run for president of the Philippines,” she declared in her Facebook livestream.

Duterte’s announcement comes at a challenging time. She is facing multiple impeachment complaints in the House of Representatives over alleged corruption and an alleged death threat against President Bongbong Marcos.

Despite backing Marcos’ election bid five years ago, Duterte and the president have since become bitter rivals, particularly after a 2024 corruption probe into her alleged misuse of government funds.

Tensions escalated further last year when Marcos approved the arrest of her father by the Philippine National Police and Interpol, in coordination with the International Criminal Court.
